Vacuum wasn't really for ease....
According to 'Collectible Automobile' magazine, the real reason for the vacuum gearshift on these Chevys was not to make shifting easy. It was to slow down gear changes, because the synchromesh in this transmission was too weak to stand fast shifts.

I guess 1938 was either really dry, or a watershed in Jam Handy film production, as this the 2nd film I've seen that featured how wonderful the new gear shift is (See 'Easy Does It' for more shifting gears hilarity). Fairly typical chevy structure here. AKA the narrator frist explains about something else, then ties it in with Chevy Automobiles. The topic this time is vacuums. Not just the ordinary household ones, by many scientific (and human) ones as well. Soon, after we visit the science labs, we realize we're getting hoodwinked once again as the conversation turns into this explanation of how the vacuum control works in the gear shift of the automobile. Not that interesting. I actually preferred 'Easy Does It' a lot better.
